The present study aimed to examine the role of individual differences in cognitive performance by simultaneously analyzing the effects of personality traits and fluid intelligence within the framework of the Explanatory Item Response Theory (EIRT) model. A total of ۱۰۰ volunteers participated in three assessments: the NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-FFI_۶۰), Raven’s Progressive Matrices, and the N-back cognitive task. Data were analyzed using the EIRT model, in which the Big Five personality dimensions, fluid intelligence, and reaction time were included as individual-level predictors. Results indicated that neuroticism had a significant negative effect on cognitive performance, whereas openness to experience showed a significant positive effect. Contrary to expectations, conscientiousness exhibited a weak negative effect, while extraversion and agreeableness were not significant predictors. Moreover, fluid intelligence emerged as a strong and significant predictor of cognitive performance, and its interaction with neuroticism suggested that intelligence may buffer the detrimental effects of negative emotions. Reaction time functioned solely as a control variable and did not exert a significant direct effect. Overall, the findings highlight that cognitive performance is neither solely a product of cognitive abilities nor of personality traits, but rather the outcome of their complex interaction. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that employing the EIRT model as a novel psychometric approach provides a more precise framework for analyzing individual differences and elucidating underlying cognitive mechanisms.
