- Abstract
- Regarded both as a mental and text-induced process, translation is inherently linked to the translator as the agent who serves psychological dispositions. This study examined the relationship among translators’ personality types and their revision behavior and performance. It also addressed the intercorrelation among various dimensions of revision behavior, the role of translators’ personality type and function on revision quality and the role of text type in translator-revisers’ performance. The research was conducted in two phases with a mixed-method design. The first phase was an attempt at capturing the translators’ revision behavior through a questionnaire. To this end, the developed instrument was distributed online and on site and answered by ۲۰۷ participants. The second phase of the study was concerned with the revision performance by focusing on the quality of the revision outcome. For this phase, ۶۰ participants were asked to revise three different text types translated by another participant. Regarding the data analysis of the first phase, Exploratory Factor Analysis was conducted and subsequent statistical tests were run. The results demonstrated the absence of statistically significant relationships between specific personality types and the majority of documented revision behavior. To account for whether significant differences exist between translators with different personality functions and their revision behavior, significant statistics were generated. The findings also demonstrated that while personality does not clearly determine revision outcomes, it distinguishes the way translator-revisers executed their corrections through various text types. Therefore, the findings hold implications for the pedagogy of translation, translation revision, and the communities of practice.
