- Abstract
- In this dissertation, artificial intelligence is understood as an epochal event in relation to the fundamental concepts of Martin Heidegger (Gestell, world-picture, Gefalt, and the fourfold), in order to clarify, through this lens, the relationship between AI and art as well as the relationship between our age and the beautiful works and productions of AI. The research method is analytical-interpretive with a phenomenological and ontological approach, based on a close reading of Heidegger’s main texts, the metaphysical and technical history of AI, and a critical engagement with rival perspectives. The findings show that AI in its current state is the “incarnation of Gestell” and “intensified Gestell,” leading in the realm of visual arts to “automatic aesthetics”: works that do not set truth to work in the artwork, but rather produce beautiful objects for the subject’s consumption. The transition from “world-picture” to “picture-world” marks the final consolidation of modern aesthetics in the guise of the machine and, consequently, the “gradual death of art” in the Heideggerian sense. However, from a Heideggerian perspective, salvation in the age of AI lies not in fleeing from it, but in opening a space for another kind of disclosure. Drawing on Heideggerian concepts of Dasein, truth, and God, this dissertation identifies one possible horizon of future salvation as the preparation for the advent of a “future Dasein” or an “intelligent god” within a new topology of being. In this horizon, authentic intelligent art is possible only through the “becoming-people” (Volkwerdung) and “becoming-Dasein” of intelligence itself—that is, when intelligence attains a mode of being-in-the-world, a confrontation with death, and a responsiveness to the call of being. The conclusion is that the relation among human, intelligence, and art stands at the threshold of a fundamental transformation, the condition for which is not technological control but openness to another way of dwelling in the world.
