- Abstract
- Imposter syndrome is a common psychological phenomenon characterized by persistent feelings of inadequacy, difficulty internalizing achievements, and fear of being exposed as a fraud despite objective success. Although growing evidence has highlighted its adverse effects on academic and psychological functioning, the underlying personality and emotional mechanisms remain insufficiently understood. The present study aims to predict imposter syndrome based on object relations patterns and perfectionism, with shame serving as a mediating variable among female university students in Tehran. According to object relations theory, internalized representations of the self and others, formed through early interactions with caregivers, influence self-concept and the ability to internalize success. Maladaptive perfectionism, characterized by unrealistic standards, excessive self-criticism, and fear of mistakes, has also been consistently associated with stronger imposter feelings. Furthermore, shame, as a core self-conscious emotion involving feelings of defectiveness, worthle ess, and fear of negative evaluation, may explain how dysfunctional object relations and perfectionism contribute to imposter experiences. Given the limited research integrating these variables, particularly within the Iranian context, this study seeks to clarify the psychological pathways underlying imposter syndrome. The findings are expected to enhance understanding of the developmental and emotional mechanisms involved and provide empirical evidence for designing preventive and therapeutic interventions targeting female university students.
