    Abstract
This dissertation critically examines the historicity of religious understanding in contemporary Islamic thought, with particular reference to the works of Mohammed Arkoun, Abdolkarim Soroush, and Abdelmajid Charfi. Its central question is how these three thinkers conceptualize the historical character of understanding religion, and what consequences their views have for the interpretation of sacred texts, religious truth, the boundaries of religiosity, religious authority, jurisprudence, and the relation between religion and the modern world. Methodologically, the study adopts a qualitative, analytical-comparative, and critical approach, drawing on philosophical hermeneutics, discourse analysis, and the sociology of knowledge. The dissertation argues that Arkoun develops the issue through the critique of Islamic reason, the category of the unthought, and a historical-anthropological reading of religion; Soroush formulates it through the distinction between religion and religious knowledge, the contraction and expansion of religious understanding, and the transformation of religious experience; and Charfi articulates it through the distinction between the religious message and its historical manifestations, emphasizing historical-critical method and the critique of traditional religious institutions. The study concludes that the historicity of religious understanding can open a path toward the renewal of Islamic thought only if it is accompanied by clear textual, rational, normative, and institutional criteria. Without such criteria, it risks collapsing into relativism, rupture from the founding text, and a crisis of religious authority.
