- Abstract
- AbstractAvestan, one of the Old Iranian languages, is an inflectional language with an eight-case system (nominative, accusative, genitive, dative, instrumental, locative, ablative, and vocative). This study aims to analyze the role of the verb in determining the case of its dependents and to investigate the syntactic and semantic functions of each case. The corpus consists of three Avestan texts from the Ya?ts (Mihr Ya?t, ?b?n Ya?t, and Ti?tar Ya?t) based on Reichelt's edition (۱۹۰۹). The research method is descriptive-analytical, and the data have been extracted and >The findings show that Avestan has largely preserved the eight-case system of Indo-European. The verb plays a central role in determining the case of its dependents: transitive verbs take the accusative for the direct object; ditransitive verbs take the dative for the recipient and the accusative for the theme; motion verbs take the ablative for the source and the locative for the location; and perception/emotion verbs take the genitive for the stimulus. Furthermore, case alternation is observed with certain verbs, leading to subtle semantic differences. Primary cases (nominative, accusative, genitive, dative) primarily encode syntactic functions, while peripheral cases (instrumental, locative, ablative) encode adverbial/semantic roles. This research demonstrates that the Avestan case-marking system is coherent, verb-driven, and meaning-oriented. Understanding this system is essential for the accurate interpretation of Zoroastrian religious texts and for historical Iranian linguistics. Keywords: Avestan, grammatical case, verb, verbal dependents, case marking, Ya?ts, historical linguistics
