    Abstract

Addiction among women, particularly mothers, is one of the most complex contemporary social and health challenges, leaving multilayered consequences on their individual, familial, and social well-being. Motherhood within the context of addiction is a profound and multidimensional experience that not only exacerbates the physical and psychological harms of substance use but also severely undermines the maternal role, thereby reducing the quality of life of both mothers and their children.

The present study aimed to identify and design a social work intervention model to improve the quality of life of this vulnerable group. Conducted with a qualitative approach, the study employed literature review, thematic analysis, and the Delphi method. Data were collected through an examination of prior research and ۲۴ in-depth interviews with mothers who use drugs, social workers, and addiction service managers in Yazd. Sampling was purposive, consistent with the qualitative nature of the study, and continued until data saturation was achieved.

Following the extraction of ۳۸۶ initial codes, the analysis yielded ۸ core themes, ۲۲ categories, and ۸۹ subcategories. Results from the Delphi stage indicated that the main dimensions of the social work intervention model include comprehensive assessment of individual and family conditions, organization and management, provision of necessary support, inter-organizational services, and empowerment.

Findings emphasize that improving the quality of life of mothers who use drugs requires comprehensive, gender-sensitive, and multi-level interventions that address their psychological, social, economic, and familial needs. The proposed model can serve as a foundation for designing localized interventions, developing specialized guidelines, and informing social policy in the field of women’s addiction. As a strategic framework, it paves the way for social reintegration, sustainable empowerment, and holistic improvement in the quality of life of mothers and their children.
