- Abstract
- The present study addresses a fundamental problem in the tradition of modern philosophy: the relationship between self-consciousness, objectivity, and the social. This issue gained centrality because, in Kant's critical philosophy—although transcendental self-consciousness was established as the condition for the possibility of objective knowledge—it faced fundamental challenges due to its formal and merely subjective nature, and its inability to elucidate its ontological relation to the world, particularly the social world. On the other hand, the modern social world, which had been reshaped following the transformations of the Renaissance, the Reformation, and the French Revolution, required a philosophical foundation to be contemplated as an independent reality and a subject for objective knowledge. The central claim of this thesis is that Hegel, in his Phenomenology of Spirit, while outlining the course of the realization of self-consciousness, succeeds in "deducing" the social as an independent actuality that transcends individuals. This deduction, which is considered a continuation and deepening of Kant’s project of transcendental deduction, not only reveals the necessity of the emergence of the social sphere in modern human life but also explains the nature of the social as a modern phenomenon distinct from any form of pre-modern collective life. More precisely, this deduction is essentially the foundation of the modern social world; for it is only after this deduction that one can speak of social reality, as the subject of modern social sciences and an object of knowledge, in its independence and being-for-itself
