- Abstract
- Audio description (AD) is an accessibility-enhancing service that provides verbal descriptions of visual elements in audiovisual materials for individuals who are blind or partially sighted (BPS). The present study aimed to investigate the balance between objectivity and subjectivity in Persian AD of movies in Iran, where there are no formal guidelines, resulting in inconsistencies that affect the experiences of the audiences, in order to see how these elements are manifested in the two channels of filmic information, namely visual and acoustic, and their corresponding meaning codes. To this end, a corpus-based approach was employed, and the transcriptions of the first ۱۵ minutes of ۱۰ Persian AD scripts from ۲۰۲۴ productions by Sevina Group and Gooshkon, the two active AD-producing bodies in Iran, were analyzed using Romero-Mu?oz’s Codebook of Meaning Codes. The descriptions were categorized into meaning codes of the visual (iconographic, photographic, mobility, shot, graphic, editing) and acoustic (linguistic, paralinguistic, musical, special effects, sound position) channels, and were compared against the definitions of objectivity and subjectivity proposed by Romero-Mu?oz. Findings revealed that ADs mainly focus on the visual channel, and within this channel, the mobility, iconographic, and editing codes are the most frequent. In contrast, the acoustic channel was used rarely, and within this channel, the special effects code was the most frequent. The ADs were mostly objective, and the shot, graphic, and musical codes were even ۱۰۰% objective, while mobility and iconographic codes were described with notable subjectivity. The comparative analysis of Sevina and Gooshkon revealed that their overall strategies are similar, but their tactics differ, particularly in the asynchronicity of the ADs of Sevina. These results indicate that AD is a complex process of maintaining a balance between objectivity and subjectivity. The study has provided insights into Iranian AD practices and emphasized the need for guidelines to ensure consistency. It contributes to multimodal translation studies and offers practical implications for audio describers, enriching the viewing experiences of BPS audiences
